First, Biba Caggiano, owner of one of Sacramento's most admired restaurants, posted a photo of our Sangiovese on Facebook with a caption by her husband Vincent, who is a physician/wine judge and coincidentally the wine buyer for Biba's. Vincent opined that it "tastes like a Brunello."
Next, I went to my favorite shop in Napa for hard-to-find wines, Back Room Wines, to look for a theme for the Monday Morning Tasting Group. It's my turn to host. Owner Dan Dawson helped me put together an interesting tasting in record time, so while he was doing the paperwork I wandered over to see what his notes (every wine in his store has his personal tasting notes on the shelf) said about the Villa Ragazzi 2012 Sangiovese. His helpful comments ended with "very 'Brunello' for a California Sangiovese."
If this keeps up, we may have to pay for DNA testing to find out the pedigree of our clone of Sangiovese. Is there a small business grant available for such research?
