This was the first time we'd entered Villa Ragazzi wines in this distinguished competition where more than 3,000 California wines vie for the judges' approval based solely on their merits. All wines are tasted blind: the judges know only the color, the type/varietal, and the vintage (if any). Naturally, the chief judge takes care to separate vintner judges from their own wines. (For the record, my panel tasted anonymous red blends, pinot grigio, Meritage blends, Chardonnay, about 150 wines over two days. The Meritage blends were excellent.)
Today the competition results were published, and we Rodenos were thrilled to find that Villa Ragazzi found favor with those who had judged Sangioveses. If I knew whom to thank, I would. Since I don't, I'll congratulate all the judges on a fine job of picking winners.
