I thought we'd seen it all, until the last wine poured in a flight of bottle-fermented sparklers turned out to be blue. It was corked, so we got a second, also blue pour. We judges were skeptical. The wine was listed as Chardonnay, but it was like no Chardonnay any of us had seen before.
Kudos to the creative winemaker who adds a bit of blueberry extract to his (her?) bubbly and markets it as perfect for baby showers and weddings ("something blue"), for the handsome price of $45/bottle. Our panel of judges agreed that was reward enough.
